Call for Abstracts

The HI-AM conference invites researchers and professionals to submit their additive manufacturing (AM) research for presentation. The conference follows a two-step submission and review process. Authors will first submit short abstracts, which will be evaluated by at least two reviewers and the conference committee. Those selected for presentation will be notified. Authors with accepted abstracts may then submit a short manuscript for consideration in the conference proceedings. Each manuscript will undergo peer review by at least two reviewers, with one round of revisions allowed. Submitting a short manuscript is optional; however, the work must be presented in order to be included in the proceedings. The following sections provide essential information on abstract/manuscript preparation, submission, review, and presentation. Authors should review this page, the Author Agreement, and the HI-AM Privacy Policy before preparing or submitting their work.

Themes

The HI-AM Conference invites submissions focused on additive manufacturing. While the primary focus areas are listed below, submissions on related topics outside this scope may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Additive manufacturing technologies: powder bed fusion (laser, electron beam), directed energy deposition (laser, electron beam, arc-based), cold spray and solid-state AM, binder jetting, material jetting, material extrusion, vat photopolymerization, hybrid processes
  • Materials for additive manufacturing and material-specific process development: metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, biomaterials, functional and advanced materials, multi-material systems
  • Design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)
  • Material, process, and component modeling
  • Metrology, control, and quality assurance
  • Characterization and post-processing
  • Additive manufacturing applications: aerospace, automotive, medical and biomedical, energy and natural resources, consumer products

Abstracts and Presentations

Submission:

  • Abstracts must be submitted through the conference submission portal, as no other submission methods are accepted. Registration is required to access the portal. After submitting your abstract, you can log back into the portal to edit and manage submissions and check submission status.
  • Submissions must be relevant to the topics listed above and describe original research studies. Abstracts from companies or other non-academic organizations are welcome, but they must be of a technical or R&D nature and present substantive technical data. Commercial presentations that focus primarily on product promotion will not be accepted.
  • The following information is required for abstract submission: title, abstract (300 words or less), keywords, authors and affiliations, presenting author’s bio (100 words or less).
  • Abstracts can be edited until the submission deadline. No modifications will be allowed once the review process begins.
  • Authors may request to withdraw their abstract at any time. However, if the withdrawal occurs shortly before the conference, it may not be possible to remove the abstract from the published materials. If you have registered for the event and need to withdraw, please consult the registration deadlines to determine if you are eligible for a refund.

Review:

  • Complete abstracts submitted by the deadline will be evaluated by the HI-AM review committee, consisting of experts in the field. Each abstract will be reviewed and scored by at least two reviewers based on its overall quality and relevance to conference theme.
  • Abstracts will undergo a double-blind review process.
  • Authors will be notified of the acceptance status of their submission on the date specified in the table above. Accepted submissions will include information on the assigned presentation type (oral or poster), as well as the presentation date and time.
  • Presentation types are assigned based on the abstract’s overall score and the program balance. Authors cannot specify a preferred presentation type during submission or request changes afterward.

Next Steps:

  • If your abstract is accepted, the designated presenting author must register for the conference by the deadline specified in the table above. This will serve as confirmation of your acceptance to present. Failure to do so will result in the removal of your scheduled presentation from the conference program without notice. If you need to request a presenter substitute, please contact us at hiam@uwaterloo.ca before the deadline.
  • Authors must notify us if they are unable to attend and present their work. Failure to do so may result in future submissions being declined.
  • If your abstract has been selected for oral presentation, prepare your slides in PowerPoint and bring them on a USB stick. Presentations should be 15 minutes in length, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. You can upload your presentation to the laptop in the presentation room during the break before your assigned session. All files will be removed from the presentation laptop after the event. However, if your file contains sensitive information, you can inform the AV technician in the room, and they will ensure it is deleted immediately after your presentation.
  • If your abstract is selected for a poster presentation, you are responsible for printing, transporting, and setting up your poster. Push pins will be provided, and each stand will be labeled with the poster code and title. Poster dimensions must not exceed 45” (W) x 36” (H).
  • Optional: Submit a short manuscript for consideration in the conference proceedings. Refer to the following section for details.

Manuscripts

Submission:

  • Authors with accepted abstracts, regardless of the presentation format (oral or poster), are eligible to submit a short manuscript for inclusion in the conference proceedings. Submitting a manuscript is entirely optional and does not impact your presentation or participation status. However, the research must be presented at the conference to be considered for publication in the proceedings.
  • Manuscripts must be submitted through the same portal used for abstract submission. Detailed instructions and a direct link will be sent via email.
  • The submitter, acting on behalf of all authors, must confirm that they have read and agreed to the terms specified in the Author Agreement. These terms cover important aspects such as copyright ownership, Creative Commons license assignment, plagiarism check, the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), and other related matters.
  • Authors must use the conference manuscript template to prepare their submission. The template includes detailed guidelines for sections, formatting, referencing styles, and accessibility requirements. Strict adherence to the provided formatting guidelines is required. Deviations from these guidelines will result in the rejection of your manuscript.
    Download the Manuscript Template
  • Manuscripts should not exceed four pages in length, including figures, tables, graphs, and references. Submissions must be received in .doc or .docx format.
  • Authors are encouraged to retain the original title and abstract in their manuscripts. Only very minor revisions, resulting in minimal changes to the originally proposed work, may be accepted, subject to the editor's judgment. Substantial alterations to the title or abstract will not be permitted.
  • Authors may request to withdraw their manuscript at any time before a final decision is made.

Review:

  • After submitting your manuscript, the review process starts. Therefore, you will not be able to edit your submission. You can, however, log back into the portal to check the decision status.
  • Complete manuscripts will be assigned to an independent associate editor for initial evaluation and reviewer assignment. Each manuscript will be reviewed by at least two reviewers.
  • Manuscripts will undergo a single-blind review process.
  • Manuscripts will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
    • Originality and innovation
    • Technical and scientific quality
    • Significance of results
    • Language and structure
  • Once the reviews are evaluated by the associate editors, a final decision will be made by the editors-in-chief and communicated to you.
  • If you are asked to submit a revised version of your manuscript after review, you will receive a new submission link via email. Only one round of revisions is anticipated.

Production, publication, copyright:

  • If your manuscript is approved, the managing editor will contact you regarding any necessary revisions for production.
  • The final version will be published in PDF format as part of an issue in the HI-AM Conference Proceedings and assigned a digital object identifier (DOI). The proceedings are digital and will be available on an Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform managed by the University of Waterloo Library. This site is indexed by Google Scholar, allowing your publications to be cited by other researchers, increasing the visibility and impact of your contribution.
  • The proceedings are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).
